Location : in Santiago, Chile
My internship took place at the Laboratory of Geomatics and Landscape Ecology (GEP), at the University of Chile. I worked on a first big project with a young engineer : I had to model the humidity of a valley of the Cordillera (from satellite images and field samples) near which hydropower plant constructions took place, in order to analyze the impact on the environment.
The second project involved the study of a non-native and invasive plant on Chiloe Island, still from satellite images, but I did not have time to go into the subject further.
This internship allowed me to gain experience abroad, to discover a country, a culture very different from ours and the new working methods, to meet extraordinary people, I was also able to practice well Spanish, my language of work on the spot.
Technically, I learned a new computer language (the R) and I was able to apply my in-depth knowledge on very concrete and motivating topics on serious environmental issues. I also participated in writing the laboratory’s research reports (still in Spanish).
