LAREG laboratory

The LAREG (Geodesy Research Laboratory) covers several important areas of Geodesy. It benefits from a strong partnership with the Department of Geodesy and Leveling of the IGN, as well as with the Space Geodesy Research Group (GRGS).

The mission of the Geodesy Research Laboratory (LAREG) is multiple: to produce geodesic references, or geometric reference points, from the numerous information provided by a plethora of instruments (satellites, radio telescopes, laser telescopes, Doris beacons ...); improve their processing to make possible the comparison over time of different coordinates; but also to determine the Earth’s gravity field, which gives information on the altitudes and movements of our planet.

The laboratory benefits from a strong partnership with the geodesy and leveling department of the IGN as well as with its European counterparts. Internationally, the institute is an active member of the International Association of Geodesy, which brings together some 80 countries and several hundred laboratories.

Member of the Space Geodesy Research Group since its creation, the laboratory recently joined the Earth-Planet Pole of the Paris-Diderot University Space Campus (fr) by signing a convention with the Institute of Physics of the Globe of Paris (fr) in 2006.

Activities

  • Space geodesy: DORIS data analysis, satellite laser telemetry data analysis, combination of benchmark at the observation level...
  • Reference systems: ITRF calculation, combination methodology, optimal definition of a benchmark...
  • Gravity field: field and geoid modeling, mobile gravimetry, evaluation of field models…
  • Scientific applications of GNSS: improvement of the determination of the vertical component by GNSS, measurement of the deformations related to the overloads, measurement of the water vapor content of the atmosphere ...
