The press conference launching the Université Gustave Eiffel happened Tuesday January 28th to present the new university, its project, organization and development opportunities.
Hélène Jacquot-Guimbal, Interim President of the Université Gustave Eiffel presented the vision that drives the new university: "Six training and research establishments, with recognized specializations in the fields of sustainable cities and transport, are combining their skills and know-how to create a university of international standing. The Université Gustave Eiffel concentrates a quarter of national research and development on the sustainable city. Human-sized university bringing together multidisciplinary skills to conduct quality research in the service of society, offering training adapted to the socio-economic world and support changes in society and public policies." she said at the University’s launch press conference.
The creation of the Université Gustave Eiffel on January 1st, 2020 aims to implement an unprecedented interdisciplinary approach on the sustainable development of the territories and cities of the future; this is at the heart of its founding collective project. This project is part of a common history initiated more than 20 years ago between each establishment. The Investment for the Future Program has accelerated this cooperation.
This new university is one of the major milestones of the FUTURE (French University on Urban Research and Education) excellence initiative project funded by the Investments for the Future Program and supported by ComUE Université Paris-Est.
The Université Gustave Eiffel is born from the merger of UPEM and IFSTTAR, it integrates a school of architecture - EAV & T, as well as three engineering schools - EIVP, ENSG Géomatique and ESIEE Paris.
It brings together 17,000 students, 500 doctoral students, 1,200 researchers, teacher-researchers and teachers, accompanied by 1,300 administrative and technical staff. Its establishment is national, within different campuses in french regions. Its main university campus is located in Marne-la-Vallée, in the heart of the Greater Paris.
It is the first French university by the number of students enrolled in apprenticeship; more than 22% of university students. For more than fifteen years, the university has been developing learning in numerous training programs, promoting pedagogy based on work-study as well as professional integration (pre-recruitment) and the employability of students throughout their career. The 3,500 students concerned come from all areas of training: human and social sciences, economic sciences and management, letters, arts and languages, mathematics, computer science, physics, etc.
For students, apprenticeship thus reassures young people about their future and their attraction, the university maintains close links with companies in the form of agreements and partnerships such as BNP Paribas, Eiffage, Veolia, Thales, Engie, IBM , Orange, La Société Générale, Aéroports de Paris, Disney, Hermès or Guerlain who, each year, integrate students into their departments during their training before recruiting them.
The Descartes campus in Marne-la-Vallée accommodates 80% of the staff and most of the students, other students are located in Paris, the 500 doctoral students from the university are spread across all campuses, in Île-de -France and in other french regions. The university has locations in Nantes and Lyon, but also in the PACA region with the Mediterranean campus, in Lille, Versailles and Paris (EIVP). The other IFSTTAR campuses are essentially research-oriented.
By positioning itself as a "European university with an international vocation", the Gustave Eiffel University has set itself the ambition of becoming an internationally recognized institution in the field of sustainable cities. To anchor this ambition, the university will strengthen and extend its collaborations in Europe and in the world, for example through the associated international laboratories (LIA) already engaged in Europe and Canada, or on transport with the DLR (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt).
