Alice, Engineer 2nd year, 2017-2018
University of Malta in Msida.
The aim of my internship was to acquire, for the Department of Classics and Archaeology, images taken by Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and produce useful documents to understand and interpret these sites. One of the three projects was particularly important because it was the first collaboration between the Department and Heritage Malta, the Maltese national agency for museums.
Automatic flights have been created with some calculations in order to achieve a full flight coverage without missing areas. The results, obtained with the software Agisoft Photoscan, are: 3D models, Digital Elevation Models (DEM) and orthophotomosaic in high resolution. To georeference a site I used the GPS data acquired by the UAV or the Total Station Leica with some Ground Control Points.
During the internship, I created some tutorials, to create flight plans and use the software easily. I also compared the UAV used, the applications to plan a flight and the different software to process the data acquired.
